Tennessee Williams s The Glass Menagerie - 2066 Words

Tennessee Williams was born in 1911 and attended University of Missouri. At a young age he was inspired to become a playwright by watching Henrik Ibsen’s Ghosts. As he grew older he battled with depression and addiction. He had a constant fear of going insane like his sister. That fear fueled his writing and eventually produced the play The Glass Menagerie. In this play Williams creates characters with depth and variety. All four characters have separate and distinct personalities. In many ways The Glass Menagerie is autobiographical to Tennessee. In the play the sister, much like his own, suffers a mental disorder rooted to an actual physical disorder of her left leg. The character s name is Laura. When Laura was young an illness left her crippled for life. As she grew up she became painfully shy and largely withdrawn from the outside world. She devotes her life to her glass menagerie which like her is exquisitely fragile and should not be moved from the shelf. Tennessee Will iams writing never lacked metaphors and like the main character Tom he had a poet s weakness. Tom is the narrator of the play and the play itself roots from his memory. Tom constantly breaks the fourth wall within the play demonstrating its stageability. Tom is an aspiring poet who works at a shoe warehouse to support his family. He is tired and frustrated with his day to day routine. He wishes to travel and find his escape in movies. Antigone vs Kreon Essay - 915 Words

Antigone vs. Kreon- Nomos vs. Written Laws Antigone is a play written in 442 B.C. (hypothetical) by the noted Greek playwright Sophocles. In the play Sophocles deals with issues such as the relationship between males and females and the state as well as the position of women in society. He uses Antigone to represent obligation to family and the gods while Kreon represents obligation of the written laws of the state. I think that if the context of the play is taken into consideration then Antigones actions were justified as she was only fulfilling her duty while Kreon was just trying to assert his dominance early in his rule. The city Thebes has just recovered from a civil war during which two brothers Eteokles and Polyneces†¦show more content†¦That fact that Antigone breaks those natural laws that are defined for each gender actually weakens her position on the burial of her brother. Firstly insults her to be father in law Kreon by opposing him and on top of that she calls him a fool (Sophocles, Antigone, p. 39). Wh en burying her brother she says that she is only obeying natural laws but then she herself breaks the natural laws by not understanding the position of and respecting men. She is placed in a precarious position where the same actions earn her the respect of her family and the gods while oppose her to the state. Kreon on the other hand on the other hand personalizes power when he looks at his state as a ship. He believes that as a leader he cannot show any weakness and has to uphold the laws that were written down by earlier generations. He says that, I recognise that this ship keeps us safe, and only when we sail upright can we make friends for ourselves (Sophocles, Antigone, p. 28). In following these lines he declares that he would not honour Polyneces with a proper burial as he had betrayed the city and the state. If Kreon did in fact give both brothers a decent burial he could have been under pressure from his subjects considering that one of them was a traitor to the state. On the other hand by honouring only one brother and deciding to prosecute Antigone he lost the respect of his son. Are Sports Programs For Children And Teenagers Too Intense

Are sports programs for children and teenagers too intense? Youth sports are being questioned by the public as being too intense. One of the reasons for this is that sport specialization is up to a record high 25 percent(Sirs). This means that one in every four people are only playing one sport which can lead to injuries and psychological issues. Another issue is injuries in youth sports. Most specifically football is being researched intensely for head injuries that can hurt the children for the rest of their lives. Even though some believe that youth sport programs should be less intense they still believe that all sports are helping the youth grow up to be leaders for the next generation. Although this is true it is still only at 25 percent. Sports specialization should not happen un til 15 or 16 according to a harvard study(Sirs). If 25 percent of people are specializing in one sports that mean 75 percent of youth are not focusing on one sport. So even though some youth are specializing in one sport he majority of of youth players do not focus on one sport but rather play multiple sports. Jane Cray, a parent whose child specialises in hockey, says that the main reason she lets her son, who is 10, specialize is she believes that this will help him earn an athletic scholarship to a major college. This is not true. There was a study done by harvard in which they found out that specializing does not make you a better athlete or better at that one sport. Playing multiple sports when youth athletes are young helps develop to the athletes athletic potential quicker than they would. The second reason adults believe youth sports are too intense is because of the growing increase of injuries. The argument I would make against that almost double kids are actually playing sports now. If more youth are playing the sport then it’s reasonable to think that there would be more injuries.
